Hey guys,
Really enjoyed your podcast, I agree with more or less everything you said regarding each and every track. It’s a great album and awesome to hear some appreciation for it. Keep it up! Next podcast 1999?

Owenworld: Welcome to the family.
Whats next? I think we’ll get into the Controversy album.
I was really disappointed not to hear the music from the record inbetween the chatter.
Yes, I heard your reasons.
But really…
The worst, HE would have asked you to remove it from broadcast.
It could have BEEN if only if I did not have to redo the show using AUDACITY in order to present it properly to Thomas who does not own a computer but is the biggest Price fan I know. I made it right for him. Burned to CD.
He loved it.
Make the Contoversy discussion what it should be.. when you get around to it.
Ending with:
Love the fact there IS a PRINCE podcast.
Please bring more.
Ignore me if you have to.
Tangerine - Thanks for the comments!
About the music, yes I really really want to add it BUT, I’ll explain on the next show why I won’t. (a personal Prince story).
We are gonna record the Controversy show this Sunday.
Hey guys,
really enjoyed the Podcast here In London.
You know, Dirty Mind was what got me into Prince. Even though Purple Rain made me find out more (and this was in 1988 or something) I spent my first big pay cheque on the back catalogue having heard Dirty Mind in the recka stow where I checked it out. It’s thie thing I miss most from his newer stuff, the harsh, stark drums and minimal riff.
Oh my! And keeping it secret from my parents didn’t last long as I started to wear the same kind of panties!!
Nice work on the podcast - may you continue to broadcast and I am really looking forward to more.
And I think Tangerine is right - and I don’t know about over there but in England I am sure you are allowed a fwe seconds before you have to pay for the rights - but what do I know? Hope you don’t get sued! Maybe he’s got too much on at the moment in that department to worry about it?
Good luck
Scott
I enjoyed the first episode. “Dirty Mind” is my favorite Prince album, so after listening to the podcast a few times, I had to get back into the record and build on the discussion.
Tobias is on point that “Dirty Mind” is the cornerstone of Prince’s sound, but in the talk I think you missed some of its significance. The album is his first masterpiece and the foundation for “Controversy,” “1999,” and even, thematically, to “Come.” Think that’s far out? Compare “Papa” to “Sister.” It also established some trademarks: pseudonyms (first appearance of Jamie Starr), writing funny (U, 4, 2, etc.), the spiked, purple trenchcoat.
Another thing to factor is the beginning of his relationship with Steve Fargnoli; that’s a huge detail you both missed. It was Fargnoli that suggested he take the demos to Warner as his next release; he hired Al Beaulieu to do the photography (who went on to shoot everything thru “Purple Rain,” including all the Vanity 6 and The Time stuff) which established that “look” — even though Prince was looking rough as hell, that photography polished his ass off.
Tobias also hit the nail on the head with his remarks about “When U Were Mine.” Figure this: if nothing else the song is a blueprint that Prince has followed successfully throughout his career. Forget for a minute that it’s damn near perfect. Here’s a Black man that can write catchy, cohesive songs that not only have “pop” appeal, but, technically, aren’t “r&b” songs. Check out one of it’s descendants “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.” Take out the easily-removable second half, and the two songs are identical right down to the guitar sound and the background vocal style. “Cream” and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” are other examples.
Last point: I think you all slept on the influence he had on European musicians at that time. He toured several European cities to support “Dirty Mind” and those cats were listening and got their ish together afterwards. It’s no coincidence that Thomas Dolby comes out with “She Blinded Me with Science” in 1982 and then says that Prince is the greatest keyboard player he’s ever known. Now, I don’t believe that Dolby saw a Prince show in 1980 and ran to the lab, but I do believe that he was already hip to Prince; especially when Dolby blew up months before “1999″ was released. And don’t forget Human League and a host of other weird-dressing, makup-clad white acts.
So as you get into “Controversy,” I’m hoping that you dig into what was going on during and after its release. Jagger wanted Prince to open for the Rolling Stones behind “Controversy,” remember? Stuff like that.
Arturo: Thanks for the info. Sounds like we gotta have u on the podcast.
Hey guys!
Althom here….all the way from Australia and I must say I really enjoyed your podcast. I just finished listening to it and I’ve obviously got to catch up with all the other podcasts. lol
One thing I wanted to say was about you theory of Prince doing albums in two’s. I never thought about it that way, but I think you have a point here.
Can’t wait to here the other podcasts and I’m really looking forward until you do the Purple Rain and ATWIAD albums. Especually the ATWIAD album as that was the album that really got me hooked onto Prince.
Keep it up guys.
cheers.
althom.
Hey guys.
Just picked up on the podcast on the weekend and it’s great !!
Nice to see a couple of passionate fans like myself enjoying the music and talking about it.
Have to agree Dirty Mind has some of my favourite Old School Prince stuff on it. For whatever reason my Dirty Mind album on my iTunes library didn’t survive a transfer so you guys had me buying ANOTHER copy of my fav songs.
I’ve always seen Prince’s albums in pairs as well. Its not always a strict rule - but he definitely seems to focus on one segment or style for a couple of albums then go off and do something else for a while.
Lookinh forward to more shows.
Michael from Australia
Just want you to know how much I’ve appreciated your Prince podcasts
so far. Especially your take on Dirty Mind, which I really enjoyed
even without the music - keep ‘em coming!
