NPGMC Shut Down Over Lawsuit
Jul 8th, 2006 by mdean
Prince’s website NPGMC was abruptly shut down on July 4th. The website released a statement. The following is an exprect:
Once the NPG Music Club won the 2006 Webby Award, discussions within the NPG began 2 center on what was next. What’s the next step in this ever-changing xperiment? The achievements of the past cannot be questioned and we r truly grateful 4 everything that has been accomplished. But in its current 4m there is a feeling that the NPGMC gone as far as it can go. In a world without limitations and infinite possibilities, has the time come 2 once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These r ?s we in the NPG need 2 answer. In doing so, we have decided 2 put the club on hiatus until further notice.
Ok sounds like a normal Prince move right? (in my lex luthor voice) WRONG!! Actually Prince is in a trademark dispute with HM Publishers Holdings Limited. According to trademark documents the disagreement started in January 2006. The super sleuths over at the Housequake.com message board have uncovered that HM Publishers Holdings “puts out a magazine called “Nature” and they are suing NPG over the use of “NPG” because the subsidiary that “publishes” the magazine is called “Nature Publishing Group” also known as “NPG”.”
It seems until the matter can be worked out, the NPGMC website will remain shut down.

Lets hoepe he comes back soon with something bigger and better …
On a kinda related note - can you guys shed some light on why 3121 hasn’t been put onto the iTunes music store yet ??? A couple of singles and videos have been put on there - Black Sweat was pimped a fair bit - but no album.
Kinda pissed me off cos thanks to Prince I don’t buy CD’s anymore - I download all my gear. So when he doesn’t put his latest work on iTunes - I’m left standing in the store looking at the CD album and wondering if I just buy it - or wait another week…
Also I don’t get why he doesn’t just do a deal with Apple and put his whole catalogue of out-takes, videos, live stuff - all the NPG was selling - onto iTunes.
