Brilliant topic — what’s ill is you said Top Three; that made it real hard…
Top Three Prince (by date):
- Dirty Mind
- 1999
- Sign O’ The Times
I said in another post that “1999″ is our generation’s (mid-30s) “Sgt. Pepper,” but SOTT is the “White Album.” I always recommend these three as Prince introductions, but stress SOTT because it’s the pinacle of his artistry. Remember the 12-inch? Cats swore that was Prince dressed as a girl! The whole package, stem-to-stern was crazy! The promo posters were dope. The 12-inch jackets were dope. The COVER PHOTO of the album was dope! Dude, I tear up thinking about that whole period.
Top Three protege joints (no order):
- Jill Jones (the only one that can sing)
- Madhouse 8 (the most unexpected P. joint)
- Sheila E - The Glamorous Life (the most cohesive album)
What’s hard about the protege joints is that they’re still Prince albums. That’s why there’s no Time stuff on my Top 3. (Even though, Prince *clearly* pulled “Get It Up” out of his ass.) So, I try to go with something where the personality of the frontman/woman comes thru. “The Family” is right up with these, but the *only* thing that puts it as a default Number Four, is that Paul Peterson was a garbage frontman. Garbage. Even though, that was his best group concept.
p.s.: A single-disc “Emancipation” would be classic material, and don’t sleep on “Rainbow Children” as one of his best. Play that and “Lovesexy” back-to-back and you’ll see my point.
4get my question bout da intro music…i just copped dat “pandemonium” by the time….i know wat it is now
Regarding Emancipation as one of Prince’s “best”…
Disc II is absolutely one of Prince’s best albums. You mentioned it: “Holy River” “Let’s Have A Baby” “Saviour” “Friend/Lover/Sister/Mother/Wife”. GOOD GOD!!!!!
You will never convince me that that man was not (and probably still is, but that’s another topic) CRAZY in love with Mayte!
Certainly Lovesexy, SOTT, 1999 all qualify, but too often, I think, people are dismissive of Prince’s music (especially post Purple Rain) because they don’t get it first time around. How quickly did people jump right off of the Prince bandwagon when ATWIAD came out?
The Love Symbol album, for example, is full of semi-weird tongue-in-cheek stuff, but still, musically, ridiculously tight. “Love 2 the 9’s”????? OHMYGOD! Love it!
Ultimately, a lot of this boils down to something that has always been difficult to grasp: Prince is actually two different artists. There is the “studio” Prince and then there is the “live” Prince. (This is actually a documented problem from early in his career. He produces semi-R&B/Disco stuff, but live the stuff was really hard rockish sounding).
I’m rambling… but in closing… I still love the Grafitti Bridge album! “Tick Tick Bang” is a tragically misunderstood, though not great, song.

Second Post:
Jill Jones. Wore one vinly and two casette tapes OUT. Thank GOD for Japan Import CD’s!!! Jill was the only Prine “protege” who could really do her thing (For the record, I don’t count Sheila E.). I still remember the first time I heard that vocal introduction for “Violet Blue” I was just sucked in. The “For Love” 12 inch extended cut is still in my iPod. I once cut Baby, You’re A Trip with the ending of the song at the beginning as well. Still love that one.
The Time: I’ve loved ALL of the Time’s ballads, but “What Time Is It?” is still their best work (”Ice Cream Castles” a remarkably close second).
Still lovin’ the podcast guys.
